FOCUS ON HELPING THE TEAM

New supervisors on board always try to tackle every area in the department. They make sure everyone is on time and write up latecomers even if they are one minute late. They try to do everything in one day. That’s an early sign of a bad manager. If you are a supervisor, stop and ask “Am I focusing on the right things?” You are in the position because someone thought you had the skills to monitor the needs of the company. Concentrate on the big picture. Keep in mind that you are working with people who want you and the company to succeed. If you are focusing on penalizing your staff, then it’s clear, your goals are in the wrong place. You are already wasting precious time by writing up your team for reaching late. Show a little more care. If you are concerned about someone coming to work late consistently, then meet with the employee privately to express your concern and see what you can do to help. That approach will inspire your staff to go above and beyond. Do the opposite, and he will show up on time but use the time to do something else by seeking employment elsewhere. You don’t want to lose your best employee because you have been micromanaging time instead of the needs of the company.
